A duo written from the bass chair, exploring the instrument’s upper register against a piano part played almost entirely on the strings.
Shirasu refers to the raked white gravel of a Japanese garden — a surface that registers every disturbance. The piano is prepared only by hand: the pianist plays directly on the strings for the first four minutes, and the keyboard enters only once the bass has reached its highest note.
Written for the composer’s own instrument, and playable in either orchestral or solo tuning.
