An orchestral tone poem on the density of forest: sound arriving from every direction at once, with no clear source.
The starting point was an acoustic one. Standing inside dense woodland, sound has no obvious direction — reflections arrive from everywhere and the ear gives up on locating anything. The orchestration works towards that condition: no line is ever carried by a single instrument for longer than two bars.
The central section is the loudest music in the piece and also the stillest. Sixty players sustain a single chord, re-attacking at individually notated intervals, so the chord appears to breathe without anyone changing dynamic.
