Programme Note

Ryūsei takes its title from the Japanese word for a shooting star. The piece is built from one descending gesture, introduced by solo piccolo and passed downward through the ensemble until it settles in the tuba and double bass some six minutes later.

Rather than developing the material, the music erodes it. Each restatement loses a note, a beat, or an instrument, so that the final iteration is barely more than breath and the resonance of a single struck crotale.

The work was written for an ensemble of secondary-school players with a strong percussion section, and asks for control rather than power: the loudest bar in the piece lasts a single beat.
