Scoring

  • Part 1: Flute / Oboe / B♭ Clarinet / Trumpet
  • Part 2: B♭ Clarinet / Alto Saxophone / Horn
  • Part 3: Tenor Saxophone / Trombone / Euphonium
  • Part 4: Bass Clarinet / Baritone Saxophone / Tuba / Double Bass
  • Percussion (2–4 players, all parts optional)

Programme Note

Written for a school band that had lost half its players and gained a new conductor in the same year. Every part is playable by any of the listed instruments, nothing crosses the break, and the percussion is entirely optional.

The musical goal is ensemble listening rather than technique: the piece is built on long tones, and the only difficult thing about it is playing them together.
