Big Band2023

Blue Neon Tokyo

A slow-burning nocturne for jazz orchestra, written around a walking bass line that never quite lands on the beat.

Scoring

  • 2 Alto Saxophones, 2 Tenor Saxophones, Baritone Saxophone
  • 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones
  • Piano, Guitar, Double Bass, Drum Set

Programme Note

Written from the bass chair. The line came first — a loping, deliberately late walking figure — and the ensemble was built on top of it, voicing by voicing.

The chart leaves room for two open solos (tenor saxophone and guitar) but the written material is otherwise strict. The final shout chorus is scored down rather than up: the band thins to four voices at the loudest point.
