Programme Note
Kagami — mirror — is written for two spatially separated quintets. The second group performs the first group’s material in retrograde, so the piece meets itself exactly at the halfway point in a single unison chord.
The construction is strict, but the effect is not academic: because brass articulation reads differently forwards and backwards, the two halves feel like an echo rather than a copy.
Antiphonal placement is essential. A minimum separation of eight metres is recommended, with the conductor positioned between the groups.
